American Legion 4 Pillars

The four foundational pillars of The American Legion are Veterans Affairs & Rehabilitation, National Security, Americanism, and Children & Youth.

Since its founding in 1919, The American Legion has brought veterans together in service to others. These four pillars provide a framework that connects the needs of veterans and military families with the well-being of the wider community.

Veterans Affairs & Rehabilitation

The Veterans Affairs & Rehabilitation pillar advocates for veterans' access to health care and supports assistance with Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) claims, GI Bill benefits, and career opportunities. It also addresses the needs of wounded veterans and those who require additional health or rehabilitation support.

These efforts recognize that military service can have lasting effects on a veteran's health, education, and livelihood. Helping veterans understand available resources and navigate benefits is an important part of the Legion's commitment to those who have served.

National Security

The National Security pillar promotes a strong national defense and supports quality-of-life initiatives for military personnel and their families. Its priorities also include homeland security and the full accounting of service members who are prisoners of war or missing in action (POW/MIA).

Alongside national preparedness, this pillar emphasizes the people behind military service. Support for service members and their families helps maintain a lasting connection between the military community and the nation it protects.

Americanism

The Americanism pillar encourages patriotism, respect for the U.S. flag, and active participation in civic life, including voting. Youth programs such as Boys Nation, American Legion Baseball, and scouting help young people build character and develop leadership skills.

Through these activities, the Legion encourages responsible citizenship, teamwork, and an understanding of service to others. The emphasis is on connecting shared national values with meaningful participation in everyday community life.

Children & Youth

The Children & Youth pillar supports the safety and well-being of children, particularly those facing illness, financial hardship, or other difficult circumstances. It also promotes family stability and advocates against drug abuse, child exploitation, and family violence.

By focusing on both immediate needs and long-term welfare, this pillar reflects a commitment to helping children grow in safe, supportive environments. Supporting families and protecting young people are essential parts of building stronger communities.
